Question by Jessie D: What is my cancer risk after having a benign tumor removed along with the ovary it was on?
I had abdominal surgery to remove a benign tumor from one of my ovaries. My doctor said the ovary had to be removed and one of my tubes had to be removed because they were abnormal. I was wondering, with a strong family history of female cancers and having this happen to me what my risk is for getting a female cancer?

Your physician would be the only one who could begin to give you an estimate as to your risk of future cancer. It would depend on the types of cancers, at what age they were found and whether they were a slow-growing type or an aggressive cancer. There are too many variables for anyone to give you any accurate information on this. Ask your doctor this question.

With any surgery no matter how small or intense, there is always a risk. Don’t let anyone fool you/ As ar as re,moving a benign tumor. which simply put ,means you don’t have cancer. So my question to the doctor is, why is he going to such extremes for something that’s not cancer. You need to see another Dr ASAP. It sounds like you’re someones experience, I think he did something wrong. Please, go see another docotor about this, someone he doesn’t know. this is just too fishy. Let us know how this comes out. and please, don’t go back to that doctor, and I use the term loosely God bless

Having a benign tumor removed is not a risk factor for cancer. What do you consider a strong family history of female cancers? And what female cancers are you referring to? What were their ages at diagnosis? Most cancers have no relation to each other and without this information it is impossible to answer you. Family history is not often the biggest risk factors for cancer unless it is a rare hereditary type.

Any cancer treatment doesn’t guarantee lifetime remission, esp for those type of hereditary cancer.
The best thing you can do to lower your risk of getting female cancers is adopting healthy life style, which includes:

    - stop smoking
    - safe sex
    - take enough sleep
    - manage your stress
    - eat right :
*eat plenty of fruits & vegetables, beans & whole grains
*change red meat, chicken or cured/processed meat to fish
*avoid deep fried or grilled food.
*control your salt & sugar intake
*avoid caffeine, soft drinks, snacks like potato chips & alcoholic beverages

Believe it or not: food have high correlation with getting cancer. Good luck.
