In order to stay in a positive mind frame one can join a cancer group where patients with cancer or cancer survivors meet and speak about their battles or victories. These real life stories can be inspiring and can give one the determination and courage to go through the treatment. Another way to beat the stress is to read awe inspiring books about people who have beat the odds and come out victorious.

Smoking and Cessation Tools

Addiction to smoking is definitely a bane to humanity. Anyone who ever tried to quit the habit of smoking cigarettes is likely to have found it a difficult task to accomplish. To make smoking cessation an easier process, you need to have the necessary support of others and a smoking cessation aid that suits you.

First of all, decide to quit; you should yearn for it with all your heart. For one to truly kick the habit of smoking, one must make up one’s mind and be convinced that it is time to stop.

Seek help and get expert advice of qualified doctors. Your doctor could help you in motivating you. You may also speak to your pharmacist as he is likely to have loads of pamphlets detailing stop smoking medication and tips. They may also advice you well on a variety of stop smoking programs, self-help guides or books, and sometimes telephone hot lines.

You can sit with them and find out which stop smoking aids or tools would be the most effective for you. Try getting advice and tips from ex-smokers also and find out what really worked for them.

You may try out nicotine gums or nicotine patches as a way to ending this habit. When you feel like you have a craving for a cigarette, chew the nicotine gum. Since this gum contains nicotine in very small doses, by chewing it, you will gradually get your system familiarized to going on without nicotine.

This will ease your withdrawal syndromes and will decrease your tendency to smoke. When you wear a nicotine patch, it passes on nicotine into your system. As time pass by, your body will slowly start adjusting to a lifestyle with the least dependency on nicotine.

In the first few weeks, highly concentrated patches can be used. Then, gradually reduce the dosage in the following days. Nicotine gums and nicotine patches are smoking cessation aids meant to be used for a period of three months, at the very least.

Another type of medical treatment comes in the form of nicotine replacement therapy. For adopting this method, check with your doctor first, and see if nicotine replacement therapy has to be included in your cessation program.

Prescription pills form another type of tool that helps in smoking cessation programs. The popular smoking cessation pills do not contain nicotine and are found to have been helping smokers quit the habit more easily. Compared to nicotine replacement therapies, prescription pills do not inject more nicotine into the body system.

While using nicotine patches and gums, one must completely stop smoking so that the body does not have too much nicotine content. But with prescription pills, one can go about smoking at the initial stages of taking the medication. But once you set a D-date, you should stop it and continue with the pills. Herbal solutions are also available for the needy

Spleen Cancer in Dogs – What You Should Know

The spleen is an organ located below the stomach. It contains lots of blood vessels with circulating red blood cells, making it a storage for blood. It also supplies blood, and cleans up old red blood cells.

Dogs may develop masses in the spleen. These can be benign or malignant. Hemangiosarcoma is the most common type of malignant spleen tumor in dogs. This is an aggressive cancer that tends to spread to other internal organs. Once metastasis has occurred, the prognosis is poor.

Although this type of cancer can occur in any dog, it is common in middle aged to elderly dogs, especially large breeds like German Shepherd and Golden Retriever.

Canine spleen cancer symptoms

When the tumor ruptures, the spleen bleeds and internal hemorrhage occurs. Excessive blood loss may result in death. Symptoms of spleen cancer in dogs are:

  • shock
  • pale gums
  • cold body
  • weakness
  • abdominal distention
  • anemia

By the time the tumor is detected, it usually has become large and has metastasised to liver, lungs, brain and other organs.

Diagnosis of spleen tumor

Several tests can determine the existence of masses. The initial step involves a physical examination. A firm mass can be felt in the spleen area on palpation. Thereafter, radiographs of the abdomen are performed to determine if the mass is on the spleen and radiographs of the chest is for checking the spread of cancer. Abdominal ultrasound may detect cancer spread to liver and other organs. Blood tests are also carried out.

It may not be obvious before surgery whether the tumor is benign or malignant. If radiographs and ultrasound show spread of tumor to other organs, the tumor is malignant.

If no tumor spread is visible, the mass may or may not be benign. Where the tumor spread is too small to be seen, it may not be obvious if it is benign or malignant until the abdomen is opened.

Treatment for dog spleen tumor

For both benign and malignant tumors, the recommended treatment is splenectomy. If the cancer spread is minimal, chemotherapy following surgery may prolong the dog’s life span.

If the tumor is benign and the splenectomy is not carried out, there will be repeated hemorrhages that is potentially life threatening to the dog. Splenectomy gets rid of the associated problems and symptoms caused by benign tumor.

Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are debilitating treatments for dog spleen tumor. Discover how natural remedies can prevent and treat dog spleen cancer in the “Natural Help For Pet Cancer” ebook (avail for FREE).

Needless to say, I spend a lot of time searching for graphics, articles and other beneficial material which assists people to be more aware of matters involving cancer. Be sure to consider it all. Don’t forget to provide your thoughts so everyone can be aware of your advice:

—————–

Cancer – An Overview

Cancer is second only to cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death in the Western world.

Although Cancer is primarily a disease of the elderly with more than 60% of deaths from cancer occurring in those over the age of 65, cancer can strike even the youngest of children.

Cancer appears to occur when the growth of cells in the body is out of control and cells divide too rapidly. Carcinomas can develop in almost any organ or tissue, such as the lung, colon, breast, skin, bones, or nerve tissue.

Most common sites are:

Prostrate 24%

Breast 13%

Lung 13%

Colon and Rectum 9%

Bladder 3%

Uterus 2.5%

The cause of Cancer is believed to be a combination of genetic factors and outside carcinogens such as tobacco, viruses, infection, asbestos, vinyl chloride, inappropriate diet.

Cancer often has no specific symptoms, so it is important that you limit your risk factors and undergo appropriate cancer screening. The signs and symptoms will depend on where the cancer is, the size of the tumor, and how much it affects the nearby organs or structures.

If a cancer spreads (metastasizes), then symptoms may appear in different parts of the body. As a tumour grows, it begins to push on nearby organs, blood vessels, and nerves. If the cancer is in a critical area, such as certain parts of the brain, even the smallest tumor can cause early symptoms.

But sometimes cancers start in places where it does not cause any symptoms until the cancer has grown quite large. Pancreatic cancers, for example, do not usually grow large enough to be felt from the outside of the body.

By the time a pancreatic cancer causes these signs or symptoms, it has usually reached an advanced stage.

A cancer may also cause symptoms common to many other problems, such as; fever, fatigue and weight loss. This may be because the cancer uses up much of the body’s energy or it may cause the release of substances which affect metabolism.

Some lung cancers make hormone-like substances that affect blood calcium levels, affecting nerves and muscles and causing weakness and dizziness.

It is important to know what some of the general (non-specific) signs and symptoms of cancer are, but remember that having any of these does not mean that you have cancer.

Most cancers can be treated and some cured, depending on the specific type, location, and stage. The earlier tumors are found, the better the prognosis.

A good example of the importance of finding cancer early is melanoma skin cancer. Skin cancer can be easy to remove if it has not grown deep into the skin, and the 5-year survival rate (percentage of people living at least 5 years after diagnosis) at this stage is nearly100%.

Screening for breast cancer with mammograms has been shown to reduce the average stage of diagnosis of breast cancer in a population.

Colorectal cancer can be detected through fecal occult blood testing and colonoscopy, which reduces both colon cancer incidence and mortality, presumably through the detection and removal of pre-malignant polyps.

Similarly, cervical cytology testing (using the Pap smear) leads to the identification and excision of precancerous lesions.

Testicular self-examination is recommended for men beginning at the age of 15 years to detect testicular cancer.

SIGNS and SYMPTOMS

Pain may be an early symptom with some cancers such as bone cancers or testicular cancer.

Long-term constipation, diarrhea, or a change in the size of the stool may be a sign of colon cancer.

Pain with urination, blood in the urine, or a change in bladder function (such as more frequent or less frequent urination) could be related to bladder or prostate cancer.

Skin cancers may bleed and look like sores that do not heal.

A long-lasting sore in the mouth could be an oral cancer and should be dealt with right away, especially in patients who smoke, chew tobacco, or frequently drink alcohol.

Sores on the penis or vagina may either be signs of infection or an early cancer, and should not be overlooked.

Unusual bleeding can happen in either early or advanced cancer.

Blood in the sputum (phlegm) may be a sign of lung cancer.

Blood in the stool (or a dark or black stool) could be a sign of colon or rectal cancer.

Blood in the urine may be a sign of bladder or kidney cancer.

A bloody discharge from the nipple may be a sign of breast cancer.

Many cancers can be felt through the skin, mostly in the breast, testicle, lymph nodes (glands), and the soft tissues of the body. A lump or thickening may be an early or late sign of cancer. Self examination is an important diagnostic measure, particularly for breast tumors.

While they commonly have other causes, indigestion or swallowing problems may be a sign of cancer of the esophagus, stomach, or pharynx (throat).

A cough that does not go away may be a sign of lung cancer.

A tumor may be suspected for a variety of reasons, but the definitive diagnosis of most malignancies must be confirmed by histological examination of the cancerous cells by a pathologist.

TREATMENT

Once diagnosed, cancer is usually treated with a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Radiation therapy may be used to treat almost every type of solid tumor, including cancers of the brain, breast, cervix, larynx, lung, pancreas, prostate, skin, stomach, uterus, or soft tissue sarcomas.

Most forms of chemotherapy target all rapidly dividing cells and are not specific for cancer cells, although some degree of specificity may come from the inability of many cancer cells to repair DNA damage, while normal cells generally can.

Contemporary methods for generating an immune response against tumours include intravesical BCG immunotherapy for superficial bladder cancer, and use of interferons and other cytokines to induce an immune response in renal cell carcinoma and melanoma patients.

Pain medication, such as morphine and oxycodone, and anti-emetics, drugs to suppress nausea and vomiting, are very commonly used in patients with cancer-related symptoms. transmission and disease.

Advances in cancer research have made a vaccine designed to prevent cancer available. The vaccine protects against four HPV types, which together cause 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts.

The consensus on diet and cancer is that obesity increases the risk of developing cancer. The cancer-fighting components of food are also proving to be more numerous and varied than previously understood, so patients are increasingly being advised to consume fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables for maximal health benefits.

How You Can Survive Stage 4 Cervical Cancer

Being diagnosed with stage 4 cervical cancer is not something everyone wants to hear in their lives. However, it does happen and you’re probably reading this article because it has happened to you. Or perhaps a loved one has been diagnosed. Or maybe you just want to find out more information out of personal interest. Whatever the case, knowing the information contained in this article can come in handy.

Sufferers of stage 4 cervical cancer can be divided into 2 categories. The first category which is known as Stage IVA cervical cancer means that the disease is confined to the pelvis and the organs surrounding it. On the other hand, sufferers of Stage IVB cervical cancer have the disease spread out to other organs further away from the pelvis. Unfortunately, today’s treatments can only successfully treat patients in the first category while medicines can alleviate the pain and symptoms of those in the second category.

Regarding treatment for those in the first category, the main way of managing the disease is through a combination of radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Radiation therapy involves the use of high-energy x-rays to kill cancer cells in your body. Essentially, it involves putting small capsules of radioactive material close to the cervix.

Chemotherapy involves the administration of drugs to kill cancer cells and often works more effectively when done with radiation therapy. While these 2 treatments are known to be successful in increasing survival rates of sufferers, they do come with various side effects such as anemia, hair loss, nausea and vomiting just to name a few.

Stage 4 cervical cancer is not a pleasant disease to have, but it’s comforting to know that today’s technology means that you can have hope and overcome this dreadful disease.

Microcalcifications and Early Signs of Breast Cancer

Breast calcifications are calcium deposits inside breast tissue. They emerge as white spots or flecks on a mammogram and are typically so small that you couldn’t feel them.

Breast calcifications are widespread in all women and are even more common after menopause. Though breast calcifications are typically noncancerous (benign), particular patterns of calcifications – like tight clusters with irregular shapes – might point to breast cancer.

The two major kinds of breast calcifications are:

- Macrocalcifications. They come out as large white dots or dashes on a mammogram. Macrocalcifications are nearly always noncancerous and need no additional follow-up.
- Microcalcifications. They come out as extremely fine white specks on a mammogram. Microcalcifications are typically noncancerous but could sometimes be a sign of cancer.

Where and How Often Do Calcifications come out?

- macrocalcifications show up in roughly 50 percent of women over 50, and 10 percent of women under 50 years of age
- macrocalcifications are typically not troublesome and won’t need a biopsy
- 80 percent of microcalcifications are benign
- microcalcifications could assist identify ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)

A microcalcification is an increase of calcium in one spot. They are widespread and most women will have a few on their mammogram at some point in time. The majority of them are benign. A good number of women do worry regarding them, though – maybe since they haven’t been given a complete clarification of what they are.

When should you worry? First, don’t be frightened if you have microcalcifications since the majority women DO have them at some point. The doctor will take a look to observe if they warrant additional examination.

This typically happens when the microcalcifications are new, clustered firmly together, and comes out when magnified to have unusual forms. Rather than spherical, they look similar to grains of salt with irregular edges. This could be an early sign of breast cancer, most frequently non-invasive ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS or stage 0 breast cancer).

Microcalcifications couldn’t be experienced on clinical exam or your own breast self-exam. They do not harm. This is the value of mammography – it finds them long prior to they could move forward into an actual lump.

Most of the time, suspicious microcalcifications will be biopsied by means of a stereotactic method that enables the doctor to pin down their location and take away a sample consequently it could be examined by a pathologist. The intention of removing tissue by means of this method is not to get rid of all of the microcalcifications but to obtain a representative sampling accordingly a diagnosis could be completed.

For more information on the types and stages of breast cancer, watch Beyond the Shock®. Medullary carcinoma accounts for 15% of all breast cancer types. Infiltrating lobular carcinoma is a type of breast cancer that usually appears as a subtle thickening in the upper-outer quadrant of the breast.

Making up about 2% of all breast cancer diagnosis, tubular carcinoma cells have a distinctive tubular structure when viewed under a microscope. Typically this type of breast cancer is found in women aged 50 and above. Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare and very aggressive type of breast cancer that causes the lymph vessels in the skin of the breast to become blocked.

Breast Cancer Risk

The study’s results suggest that there are distinct and separate hormonal risk factors associated with different subtypes of breast cancer. Amanda Phipps, a predoctoral research associate at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, and her colleagues conducted a study to better understand the specific risk factors for the subtypes of breast cancer, which are classified by expression of the estrogen receptor, the progesterone receptor, and the HER2 receptor.

The investigators found that reproductive risk factors varied considerably by breast cancer subtype. Breastfeeding for 6 months or longer was associated with a lower risk of luminal cancer as well as triple-negative cancer, a type that can be particularly aggressive and difficult to treat.

Both late age at menopause and use of estrogen plus progestin hormone therapy were associated with an increased risk of luminal disease. Finally, no differences in risks associated with number of children or the age when a woman first gave birth were observed by subtype.

The study authors concluded that their results indicate that “certain reproductive factors may have a greater impact on risk of certain molecular subtypes of disease compared to others. Despite having a high risk of early recurrence, the study indicates that triple-negative breast cancer patients who remain disease-free for eight years are unlikely to die of breast cancer and may be “cured” of their disease. Insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, and changes in the signaling of growth hormones and steroid hormones associated with diabetes may affect the risk of breast cancer.

Despite many proposed potential pathways, the mechanisms underlying an association between diabetes and breast cancer risk remain unclear, particularly because the 2 diseases share several risk factors, including obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and possibly intake of saturated fat and refined carbohydrates, that may confound this association.

Although the metabolic syndrome is closely related to diabetes and embraces additional components that might influence breast cancer risk, the role of the metabolic syndrome in breast carcinogenesis has not been studied and thus remains unknown.
