Spleen Cancer in Dogs – What You Should Know

The spleen is an organ located below the stomach. It contains lots of blood vessels with circulating red blood cells, making it a storage for blood. It also supplies blood, and cleans up old red blood cells.

Dogs may develop masses in the spleen. These can be benign or malignant. Hemangiosarcoma is the most common type of malignant spleen tumor in dogs. This is an aggressive cancer that tends to spread to other internal organs. Once metastasis has occurred, the prognosis is poor.

Although this type of cancer can occur in any dog, it is common in middle aged to elderly dogs, especially large breeds like German Shepherd and Golden Retriever.

Canine spleen cancer symptoms

When the tumor ruptures, the spleen bleeds and internal hemorrhage occurs. Excessive blood loss may result in death. Symptoms of spleen cancer in dogs are:

  • shock
  • pale gums
  • cold body
  • weakness
  • abdominal distention
  • anemia

By the time the tumor is detected, it usually has become large and has metastasised to liver, lungs, brain and other organs.

Diagnosis of spleen tumor

Several tests can determine the existence of masses. The initial step involves a physical examination. A firm mass can be felt in the spleen area on palpation. Thereafter, radiographs of the abdomen are performed to determine if the mass is on the spleen and radiographs of the chest is for checking the spread of cancer. Abdominal ultrasound may detect cancer spread to liver and other organs. Blood tests are also carried out.

It may not be obvious before surgery whether the tumor is benign or malignant. If radiographs and ultrasound show spread of tumor to other organs, the tumor is malignant.

If no tumor spread is visible, the mass may or may not be benign. Where the tumor spread is too small to be seen, it may not be obvious if it is benign or malignant until the abdomen is opened.

Treatment for dog spleen tumor

For both benign and malignant tumors, the recommended treatment is splenectomy. If the cancer spread is minimal, chemotherapy following surgery may prolong the dog’s life span.

If the tumor is benign and the splenectomy is not carried out, there will be repeated hemorrhages that is potentially life threatening to the dog. Splenectomy gets rid of the associated problems and symptoms caused by benign tumor.

Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are debilitating treatments for dog spleen tumor. Discover how natural remedies can prevent and treat dog spleen cancer in the “Natural Help For Pet Cancer” ebook (avail for FREE).

Sarcoma Muscle Cancer

A sarcoma muscle cancer is a highly malignant and rare type of cancer that arises in the connective tissues in the body. There are approximately 9,800 new cases of soft tissue and bone sarcoma each year in the United States. It is rare among adults and accounts for less than 2% of all adult cancers. This type of cancer is more common in children and sarcoma is one of the top five most commonly diagnosed cancers among children.

Sarcoma muscle cancer is not the only type of sarcoma seen clinically. Soft tissue sarcomas are malignant tumors that can develop from fat, muscle, nerve, fibrous tissues surrounding joints, blood vessel, or deep skin tissues.

Sarcomas can develop in any part of the body. Around 55% to 60% of them develop in the arms or legs. Fifteen to twenty percent begin in the trunk, eight to ten percent in head and neck area and internal organs and around fifteen per cent originate at the back of the abdominal cavity. Sarcoma is the term used for cancers of these tissues.

The human body has 2 types of muscle: smooth and skeletal. Smooth skeletal muscle is found internal organs such as stomach, intestines and blood vessels and causes them to contract. These muscles are involuntary and hence we have no control over their functioning. Skeletal muscle is the muscle is attached to bones and aids in our movement. This type of muscle in within our control and are also called voluntary muscles.

Leiomyomas are benign tumors of smooth muscle. They can arise almost anywhere in the body where smooth muscles are present. The most common of these is the fibroid tumor that develops in many women. Leiomyosarcomas are sarcoma muscle cancer of involuntary muscle tissue. They can grow almost anywhere in the body but are most often found in the back of the abdominal cavity and the internal organs and blood vessels. Occasionally, they may affect the deep soft tissues of the legs or arms. They tend to occur in adults, particularly the elderly.

Rhabdomyomas are benign tumors of skeletal muscle. They are rare tumors. Rhabdomyosarcomas are malignant tumors of skeletal muscle. These tumors commonly grow in the arms or legs, but they can also begin in the head and neck area and in reproductive and urinary organs such as the vagina or bladder. Children are affected much more often than adults.

Surgery is the primary treatment for sarcoma muscle cancer. The main goal of surgery is to remove the tumor and at least two to three centimeters of the surrounding tissue. In the past amputation of an arm or leg was a standard treatment for soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities. Owing to advancements in surgical practice, nowadays, amputations are performed in only about five percent of cases nationwide. Most small sarcomas can be treated with surgery alone but the majority of sarcomas are greater than five centimeters in size.

These sarcomas are usually managed using a combination of surgery and radiation therapy. Radiation therapy may be used before, during, and after surgery.

How Many People Die From Cancer Each Year?

In 2005, cancer struck an estimated 1.4 million people in North America. There are about 565,650 Americans expected to die of cancer in 2008, killing more than 1,500 people each day and it is accounted for 1 of every 4 deaths. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart diseases, and if current trends continue, it is expected to be the leading cause of death by the year 2010.

The good news is that early detection, diagnosis and treatment have improved the odds dramatically. In 1995, over 50% of cancer patients survived five years or more after diagnosis and treatment. The American Cancer Society estimates that an additional 25-30% of all cancer deaths could be prevented with earlier diagnosis and treatment.

So what is cancer? Even though it is often referred to as a single ailment such as lung cancer, bladder cancer, liver cancer etc., cancer actually consists of more than 100 different diseases, all characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells.

Cancer can occur in many areas of the body and behaves differently depending on its types and origin. Cancer is caused by both external factors (tobacco, chemicals, radiation and infectious organisms) and internal factors (inherited mutations, hormones, immune conditions, and mutations that occurs from metabolism). It often takes ten or more years from exposure to external factors and a detectable cancer.

Cancer is identified by uncontrolled cell division and cell death caused by cumulative damage to important regulatory genes. Generally, multiple genes must be damaged for a cancer to grow and to develop the capacity to spread, also known as metastasis.

Cancers that seem to run in families may be hereditary or may signify similar family environmental exposure to substances that cause cell damage such as polluted, water, soil and radiation. A person identified with a specific genetic marker can choose to take preventive action such as regular medical checkups, self-exams, and lifestyle changes involving diet and exercise.

If your family history shows that certain diseases have occurred repeatedly in the past, you must be diligent about getting regular screening examinations for these diseases. Check with your health-care professional or the local American Cancer Society for more information about evaluations or cancer screenings.

There are many things we can do to prevent cancer development, and drinking adequate amount of water and the quality of the water we consume everyday has a lot to do with our health. Many studies suggest that there are links between certain cancers and the drinking water contaminants here in the US and Canada.

About 70% of the bodies’ weight is water. It is the very thing the body needs most. Water is accountable for many body functions. Drinking enough clean and fresh water not only improves your overall health and well-being, it may also prevent you from many ailments, sicknesses and cancer development

The quantity and quality of the water you drink are equally important. Give your body the quality water it deserves and in turn, it will serve you with the optimal health and appearance you have always desired. Cancer – An Overview

Many people want more info about a cancer overview, so have a look at this. Needless to say, I spend a lot of time searching for graphics, articles and other beneficial material which assists people to be more aware of matters involving cancer. Be sure to consider it all. Don’t forget to provide your thoughts so everyone can be aware of your advice:

—————–

Cancer – An Overview

Cancer is second only to cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death in the Western world.

Although Cancer is primarily a disease of the elderly with more than 60% of deaths from cancer occurring in those over the age of 65, cancer can strike even the youngest of children.

Cancer appears to occur when the growth of cells in the body is out of control and cells divide too rapidly. Carcinomas can develop in almost any organ or tissue, such as the lung, colon, breast, skin, bones, or nerve tissue.

Most common sites are:

Prostrate 24%

Breast 13%

Lung 13%

Colon and Rectum 9%

Bladder 3%

Uterus 2.5%

The cause of Cancer is believed to be a combination of genetic factors and outside carcinogens such as tobacco, viruses, infection, asbestos, vinyl chloride, inappropriate diet.

Cancer often has no specific symptoms, so it is important that you limit your risk factors and undergo appropriate cancer screening. The signs and symptoms will depend on where the cancer is, the size of the tumor, and how much it affects the nearby organs or structures.

If a cancer spreads (metastasizes), then symptoms may appear in different parts of the body. As a tumour grows, it begins to push on nearby organs, blood vessels, and nerves. If the cancer is in a critical area, such as certain parts of the brain, even the smallest tumor can cause early symptoms.

But sometimes cancers start in places where it does not cause any symptoms until the cancer has grown quite large. Pancreatic cancers, for example, do not usually grow large enough to be felt from the outside of the body.

By the time a pancreatic cancer causes these signs or symptoms, it has usually reached an advanced stage.

A cancer may also cause symptoms common to many other problems, such as; fever, fatigue and weight loss. This may be because the cancer uses up much of the body’s energy or it may cause the release of substances which affect metabolism.

Some lung cancers make hormone-like substances that affect blood calcium levels, affecting nerves and muscles and causing weakness and dizziness.

It is important to know what some of the general (non-specific) signs and symptoms of cancer are, but remember that having any of these does not mean that you have cancer.

Most cancers can be treated and some cured, depending on the specific type, location, and stage. The earlier tumors are found, the better the prognosis.

A good example of the importance of finding cancer early is melanoma skin cancer. Skin cancer can be easy to remove if it has not grown deep into the skin, and the 5-year survival rate (percentage of people living at least 5 years after diagnosis) at this stage is nearly100%.

Screening for breast cancer with mammograms has been shown to reduce the average stage of diagnosis of breast cancer in a population.

Colorectal cancer can be detected through fecal occult blood testing and colonoscopy, which reduces both colon cancer incidence and mortality, presumably through the detection and removal of pre-malignant polyps.

Similarly, cervical cytology testing (using the Pap smear) leads to the identification and excision of precancerous lesions.

Testicular self-examination is recommended for men beginning at the age of 15 years to detect testicular cancer.

SIGNS and SYMPTOMS

Pain may be an early symptom with some cancers such as bone cancers or testicular cancer.

Long-term constipation, diarrhea, or a change in the size of the stool may be a sign of colon cancer.

Pain with urination, blood in the urine, or a change in bladder function (such as more frequent or less frequent urination) could be related to bladder or prostate cancer.

Skin cancers may bleed and look like sores that do not heal.

A long-lasting sore in the mouth could be an oral cancer and should be dealt with right away, especially in patients who smoke, chew tobacco, or frequently drink alcohol.

Sores on the penis or vagina may either be signs of infection or an early cancer, and should not be overlooked.

Unusual bleeding can happen in either early or advanced cancer.

Blood in the sputum (phlegm) may be a sign of lung cancer.

Blood in the stool (or a dark or black stool) could be a sign of colon or rectal cancer.

Blood in the urine may be a sign of bladder or kidney cancer.

A bloody discharge from the nipple may be a sign of breast cancer.

Many cancers can be felt through the skin, mostly in the breast, testicle, lymph nodes (glands), and the soft tissues of the body. A lump or thickening may be an early or late sign of cancer. Self examination is an important diagnostic measure, particularly for breast tumors.

While they commonly have other causes, indigestion or swallowing problems may be a sign of cancer of the esophagus, stomach, or pharynx (throat).

A cough that does not go away may be a sign of lung cancer.

A tumor may be suspected for a variety of reasons, but the definitive diagnosis of most malignancies must be confirmed by histological examination of the cancerous cells by a pathologist.

TREATMENT

Once diagnosed, cancer is usually treated with a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Radiation therapy may be used to treat almost every type of solid tumor, including cancers of the brain, breast, cervix, larynx, lung, pancreas, prostate, skin, stomach, uterus, or soft tissue sarcomas.

Most forms of chemotherapy target all rapidly dividing cells and are not specific for cancer cells, although some degree of specificity may come from the inability of many cancer cells to repair DNA damage, while normal cells generally can.

Contemporary methods for generating an immune response against tumours include intravesical BCG immunotherapy for superficial bladder cancer, and use of interferons and other cytokines to induce an immune response in renal cell carcinoma and melanoma patients.

Pain medication, such as morphine and oxycodone, and anti-emetics, drugs to suppress nausea and vomiting, are very commonly used in patients with cancer-related symptoms. transmission and disease.

Advances in cancer research have made a vaccine designed to prevent cancer available. The vaccine protects against four HPV types, which together cause 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts.

The consensus on diet and cancer is that obesity increases the risk of developing cancer. The cancer-fighting components of food are also proving to be more numerous and varied than previously understood, so patients are increasingly being advised to consume fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables for maximal health benefits.
