Question by King DDD: What do women who have or are recovering from cancer or chemotherapy like to do for fun?
What kind of activities are women over 18 able to do while recovering from cancer? I work at a settlement school in KY, and we were going to provide room and board for women who have cancer or are in recovery this spring, kind of like a weekend retreat. Can they be social without being vulnerable to bacteria etc..? Do they even have the will to be social, go on hikes, crafts, and motivational speeches? Or would the majority prefer solitude?

That REALLY depends on the individual and their current state of health. Some may be able to be quite active, others may not or may not care to. It’s such an individual thing. Definitely hit sites that have message boards for cancer patients and do some polling so you can get some ideas.

I need help explaining this. Heres the question: In one person cancer may be cured through the use of a certain drug or by means of radiation treatment, whereas in another person cancer may be unaffected by these treatment methods. Suggest the most likely explanation for this difference in response.

There are many types of cancer cells at many different levels so even if two people have lung cancer they may have very different types and very different protocols for treatment.

Question by Red Phantom: Why do you think so much more attention is paid to breast cancer over Prostate Cancer?
The US Government spends double on breast cancer research over prostate and the corporate disparity is much greater. Campbells soup doesn’t have Prostate awareness soup cans! Although deaths from breat cancer are 1/3 higher there are far more cases of prostate cancer, over 240,000 per year. The funding and awarness differential is 300 or 400%. So is it a gender issue, an age issue (tends to be later onset) or What?

It’s “sexy”, for one thing. I know that sounds horrible, but anytime the word breast is involved, a cause gets more attention.

Another reason is for the lobbying and activism of many, many people. Both types of cancer can generally be dealt with quite well by early screening, however, even that is not failsafe.

Personally, I think we should move on to other causes. “Awareness” in particular is such a waste of funds! We’re aware already – now let’s use money to reasearch diseases that have no known treatment. Autism, for example, is sorely lacking in research funding compared to AIDS, but we all know how to avoid AIDS – not so for autism.

Because if I do have cancer I don’t want to feel the symptoms of menopause. Will all doctors refuse to give you estrogen after having cancer?

Research over the last 5-10 years shows a direct correlation between Hormonal replacement therapy and cancer. For this reason, you need to have a very detailed discussion with your physician. Death by cancer is not a pleasant experience.

Question by May Kadoody: Is anyone else upset that breast cancer is the only publicized awareness month?
I’m all for cancer awareness but why is breast cancer the only publicized cancer awareness month? Many people suffer from all types of cancer daily and I’ve had family suffer from both Leukemia and Pancreatic Cancer. It’s seems that if a celebrity is diagnosed with a cancer or has died from a cancer that’s the only way awareness will be publicized. Now that Patrick Swayze has passed I’m sure Pancreatic cancer will be well known coming this November (Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month) Does anyone agree?

One theory is that breast cancer has more survivors than most other cancers, so more people to form support groups and to be be activist for the disease. Not a whole lot of lung cancer survivors. I feel a little left out of the awareness hoopla.
