Surgeon may Determine Breast Cancer Surgery Success
(Ivanhoe Newswire) — Non-invasive breast cancer, or ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), is commonly treated with either breast-conserving surgery (with or without follow-up radiation) or mastectomy. Choosing a treatment depends on clinical factors, the treating surgeon, and patient preferences. Long-term health outcomes depend on which treatment is received. According to a new study, health …

What is my cancer risk after having a benign tumor removed along with the ovary it was on?

Question by Jessie D: What is my cancer risk after having a benign tumor removed along with the ovary it was on?
I had abdominal surgery to remove a benign tumor from one of my ovaries. My doctor said the ovary had to be removed and one of my tubes had to be removed because they were abnormal. I was wondering, with a strong family history of female cancers and having this happen to me what my risk is for getting a female cancer?

Answer by J B
Your physician would be the only one who could begin to give you an estimate as to your risk of future cancer. It would depend on the types of cancers, at what age they were found and whether they were a slow-growing type or an aggressive cancer. There are too many variables for anyone to give you any accurate information on this. Ask your doctor this question.

Ovarian Cancer Risk and Breast Cancer

Women who have developed breast cancer or who has a family history of the disease are advised to also watch out for signs of ovarian cancer. This important piece of information must reach the ears of all women who are either suffering from breast cancer or have a family history of it and are therefore run a greater risk of developing the disease.

Should women with breast cancer really worry about ovarian cancer as well? Studies were conducted not only on whether it is necessary, but also on what the women should do about it. The BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are the breast cancer genes and the mutations of these genes cause breast cancer in some patients. But even those women with no mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes seem to develop the disease.

So, obviously there is a link here, and there might possibly be another gene involved here. And what risk do these genes pose for ovarian cancer? Should women worry bout it and what can they possibly do about it?

The findings suggest that though the risk is small, there is a definite link between breast cancer and ovarian cancer, women with breast cancer need to look out for signs of ovarian cancer as well.

Earlier research suggested that when a woman carries one of the two breast cancer genes, BRCA1 or BRCA2, she is at an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer as well. The risk is almost 60 times more than that of the general population. Geneticists even advise the removal of ovaries after childbearing in women who have the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene.

The general consensus seemed to be on presuming that the patients who have breast Cancer may also be at risk for ovarian cancer as well and initiate strategies to reduce risk either through screening or preventative surgery.

But now, new research has shown that breast cancer patients without the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutation may not be at increased risk for developing ovarian cancer. This news comes as a relief for those women who were initially thought to be high risk for developing ovarian cancer and were considering removal of ovaries and the uterus. Now with the new research finding, such drastic preventative measures seem unnecessary.

There is still ongoing research to understand the risk of inherited breast cancer and the genes unidentified as yet. Though there is a small risk of increased ovarian cancer for breast cancer patients, it definitely does not warrant aggressive preventative surgery.

Spicy Cancer Fighting Herbal Compound: Apigenin

General Comments Off

The news that someone close to us or someone particularly famous has been diagnosed with a malignant disease, may cause us to pause for thought. When this happens we often stop to think that, when it comes to cancer, the odds are pretty much stacked against us and that it is only a matter of time before we have to confront that "suspicious" lump or a sinister shadow on the X-ray plate.

These thoughts are not really surprising considering the large number of different cancers that have the potential to invade our bodies – common cancers such as those of the breast, prostate, colon, lung as well as the not so common cancers such as leukemia and thyroid cancer.

If we are wise we will be making an effort to reduce our cancer risk by eating sensibly, not smoking, reducing our alcohol intake and by exercising regularly. What we should also be doing, according to a growing body of research, is eating more foods containing the natural compound apigenin.

SOURCES OF APIGENIN

Apigenin is an antioxidant flavonoid found in herbs, spices and other food plants. Examples of foods that contain apigenin are the herbs and spices, coriander, licorice, marjoram, parsley, oregano, rosemary and tarragon. Other foods such a citrus, tea, celery and wheat also contain significant quantities of this yellow cancer fighting compound.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

Although most of the research into this compound has been confined to the laboratory, scientists studying apigenin have discovered that it exhibits several different mechanisms that all work to counter the complex factors underlying cancer cell growth.

As well as interfering with a number of cancer signaling processes, apigenin also inhibits the growth of new blood vessels that malignant cells need to grow and proliferate.

HER2 BREAST CANCER GENE

As far as breast cancer is concerned, it also inhibits the expression of the HER2/neu gene. Woman who carry HER2/neu are much more susceptible to an aggressive, treatment-resistant form of cancer for which, until recently, there was no effective treatment.

Apigenin has been shown to suppress the activity of this gene and, in this regard it joins its fellow green tea based flavonoid, epigallocatechin-gallate as a potent preventive agent in those unfortunate to inherit the HER2/neu gene.

CANCERS SUSCEPTIBLE TO APIGENIN

To date apigenin has been found to inhibit the following cancer cell lines: breast, prostate, lung, leukemia, colon, ovary, skin and thyroid – malignancies that account for the vast majority of cancers to which most of us fear falling prey.

PREVENTION RATHER THAN CURE

It will be a long time before research is done into the use of apigenin in the TREATMENT of these malignancies.

And, on a cautionary note, there is also some evidence that high doses of apigenin may actually interfere with one or two chemotherapeutic agents used in the treatment of leukemia.

In other words a higher dosage of a useful anti-cancer phytonutrient is not always better than the lower dosages that are effective in preventing the onset of the disease.

EAT MORE SPICES

Instead of waiting for that to happen we should be more proactive and eat foods that contain this important phytonutrient.

A regular intake of herbs and spices such as coriander (cilantro), licorice, marjoram, oregano, parsley, rosemary and thyme (as well as other foods such as whole wheat, celery, tea and citrus) should provide protective amounts of apigenin.

Moreover, these and other spices supply many other compounds that have proven cancer inhibiting capabilities.

Is Resveratrol a Cancer Cure?

When it comes to the search for a cancer cure resveratrol is one of the many natural compounds that are being studied. Researchers have found that it interferes with all three states of carcinogenesis, from initiation to the progression of the disease.

But, these studies have only been conducted using cell lines. Scientists have found many things that are effective against cancer cell lines, even vitamin C, but when they conduct human trials, they find them to be ineffective. There is no clear understanding of why this is the case.

In addition to being studied as a cancer cure resveratrol is also being studied for its cancer-preventative benefits. Many natural health experts believe that you can greatly reduce your risk of cancer by improving your nutritional intake and regularly using supplements that contain natural plant extracts with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

They also believe that it is possible to live well past 100, without developing chronic or life threatening diseases. Again, they believe that the key is optimal nutritional intake. A totally balanced supplement would provide all of the essential vitamins and minerals, derived from natural sources.

Here’s an interesting fact, most of the supplements that you see on the market contain synthetic vitamins. When it comes to vitamins C and E, hardly any company uses the natural form. Even foods are fortified with synthetic or artificial vitamins. Why would anyone believe that these things would be good for us?

We know that artificial preservatives, colors and flavorings cause numerous health problems and many of them increase our cancer risk. Artificial vitamins are not the same on an atomic or quantum level as the natural form. Scientists can only recreate the molecule. The molecules look the same, but no one ever tested them to see if they have the same activity. To this day, no one has test artificial vitamins against natural ones.

If it is developed as a cancer cure resveratrol will likely be synthesized. They already know how to make the molecule. They just need a reason to do so. The natural version is not cheap, but it is readily available. Manufacturers choose to use synthetics because they are cheaper than the natural versions and usually they are more readily available.

If the synthetic version proves to be ineffective in treating cancers, scientists will not go back and reconsider their choice. They will not conduct additional studies to determine if the natural form is more effective.

Judging by the scientific policies that have been a part of the past, there is unlike to be a cancer cure resveratrol based product in the future. If you are well, the best thing that you can do is focus on prevention by taking an excellent nutritional supplement that includes natural trans-resveratrol in a 50% concentration.

If you are sick, the best thing that you can do is consult with a doctor of naturopathic medicine. I know people personally that are cancer-free after consulting with a naturopathic MD and following his or her advice. They may not offer a cancer cure resveratrol treatment, but they do have other options.
